CVISS

The first day of school was a success. Students are off to a great start and are excited to see what the school year holds ahead of them.

Letter From the Principal

Dear Parents:

Welcome to Centinela Valley Union High School District Independent Study School (CVISS) and South Bay Community Day School (SBCDS). I am very excited about the new school year. CVISS has been relocated to the area near the Hawthorne High football field. This location is away from distractions and is very conducive for learning and helping Independent Study students overcome any educational challenges they face.

SBCDS remains at the Redondo Beach location. The move has eased the pressure of overcrowding, and will now allow the SBCDS to implement programs that will help students get back on track and expedite their return to a traditional high school.

Our focus is on educating high school students grade 9 – 12 with an emphasis on obtaining a high school diploma, and in addition, preparing students for college, career, and life. Our enthusiastic and dedicated staff provide engaging learning experiences so that students develop knowledge and character skills needed to be successful.

I am excited to announce that SBCDS has implemented a new program called Character Counts, which covers the Six Pillars of Character: Trustworthiness; Respect; Responsibility; Fairness; Caring and Citizenship. Each of the six charter traits will be used within the CHARACTER COUNTS Program. We feel strongly that this will help our students overcome many of the challenges they face in their lives.

I personally believe that all parents want the best for their children--they want them to be successful in school and in life. However, due to the many demands of life in this modern world, many working parents have very little free time to dedicate to their teenage children. I would like parents to know that now is a very critical time in the development of their children. Although as teenagers they may say they want more independence, parents should stay involved more now than ever.

I would like to invite all parents and caregivers to visit our schools, and take part in helping us help all students live up to their full potential to obtain their high school diploma and prepare for college, career and LIFE.

I look forward to sharing more information with you as the year progresses and working with your child throughout the new school year.

Sincerely,

Michael Martinez
Principal

CVISS Has Moved!

Parents, students, and stakeholders of Centinela Valley Union High School District, we are pleased to announce the opening of the new Centinela Valley Independent Study School (CVISS). The school is now open for summer school and will be the site for the 2016-2017 school year. Although we are located on the Hawthorne High football field, CVISS is not a part of the Hawthorne High Campus. CVISS has its own office and staff. So, if you have any questions or concerns please direct all of your inquiries to the CVISS staff. Mr. Michael Martinez is the Principal and is happy to help you with all concerns that relate to CVISS.
